The Task
The rear section of Kiel’s waterfront promenade, the Kiellinie, is currently underutilized and uninviting for extended stays. During a three-day workshop, we developed conceptual designs to revitalize this area.
The floating islands concept
To enhance the appeal of the space, this concept introduces circular floating platforms that automatically rotate with the wind. These dynamic structures provide both wind and sun shelter, creating a versatile public gathering space along the waterfront.

The island
Each island features a black floating base topped with wooden planks and a three-piece sail that shields against sun and wind. The sail is mechanically engineered to guide the wind, automatically rotating the island so it always faces into the breeze for optimal shelter.
A complete setup combines multiple islands of varying sizes and features. These units harness wind power to run amenities like heated seats, showers, and coolers, with the entire cluster linked to the mainland by a two-point walkway.
